Most Scrabble players know the basics — play long words, aim for premium squares, keep a balanced rack. But the players who consistently win have a specific vocabulary of killer words ready to deploy the moment the board opens up.
This list focuses on words that use the highest-value tiles (J=8, Q=10, X=8, Z=10) and are short enough to fit into tight spots. Memorize these and you'll find 60+ point plays far more often.
The four power tiles are worth 8–10 points each on their own. Land one on a Double Letter Score and you've already earned 16–20 points before the rest of the word is counted. Stack that on a Triple Word Score and a single tile can be worth 30+ points.
The most important word on this list. QI means vital life force in Chinese philosophy. Two letters, uses Q without needing a U. This word has saved countless Scrabble games.
Slang for pizza, fully valid in North American Scrabble (TWL). Two letters, easy to place, uses the Z quickly. An absolute essential.
Short, common, and the X makes it surprisingly high-value. Works great for parallel plays near triple squares.
A Scottish word for sweetheart. Two letters, uses the J cleanly, and O is one of the most common letters in the game.
A tool used for cutting roofing slates. Three letters, uses both Z and X. On a Triple Word Score this is 57 base points from a 3-letter word.
Uses Q with a U, plus the Z. Four letters, familiar word, huge point value. On a Triple Word Score this is 66 base points.
J and X in one word. Everyone knows the meaning. When you find a place to drop it, the payoff is enormous.
The plural of OX — more playable in longer board setups. The X handles the heavy lifting while other letters are common rack staples.
Uses two Z tiles (one can be a blank). A rare play but devastating when it works.
Uses J, Z, and B in one word. Across a Triple Word Score you're looking at 69 base points plus any parallel bonuses.
Knowing a word is only half the battle. When you pick up your tiles, ask yourself "where can my J/Q/X/Z go?" before considering any other play. Use the ScrambleWiz Scrabble Score Calculator to check values, and the Word Unscrambler when you're stuck.
